The crash happened on Sunday, Sept. 17 just before 5:20 p.m. in the area of Advance Auto Parts in Bedford at 794 North Bedford Rd. (Route 117), according to Bedford Police Lt. Jeffrey Gulick.

According to Gulick, arriving officers found that a vehicle collided with a van from behind before coming to rest in the Advance Auto Parts parking lot.

The drivers of both the van and the other vehicle were not injured. However, a 24-year-old male passenger from Bedford Hills was critically injured after being ejected from the vehicle that had struck the van, Gulick said.

This passenger, whose name was not released, was unresponsive when police arrived, prompting officers to begin rendering CPR before medics and ambulance crews were able to take over. He was later taken to Westchester Medical Center with a head injury.

The passenger's current condition is unknown, Gulick said.

The driver of the vehicle, also a 24-year-old Bedford Hills man whose name was not released, has not been charged in the crash. However, Gulick said this may change as the investigation into the incident progresses, also adding that speed may have been a factor in the crash.

During the initial response to the crash, an uninvolved man was arrested after allegedly crossing police caution tape lines and refusing to leave, Gulick said.

The man, identified as Mount Kisco resident William Winstanley, age 52, was arrested and charged with obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct.
